How To Write a Simple Resignation Letter

So you finally landed that new gig? Congrats! It’s now time to say goodbye to your current employer and move forward in your journey. There’s just one thing left to do – and that’s to write a simple resignation letter and say adios for good!

This may seem like a super simple task, but sadly many people get it wrong.

You see, many employees believe when they leave an organization, they should lay all their feelings on the table. And because most professionals leave a job because of a poor leader, employees mistakenly believe they should use their resignation letter as an opportunity to share their honest thoughts and opinions with their employer – regardless of how bad they are.

However, this is NOT what you should do. And here is why…

This is a small world.

If I’ve experienced one lesson in my career, it’s that you never know when you will end up working with someone again. And even if you despise the company you are leaving and want to air those feelings out in the open – trust me it’s better to just keep it simple, smile and walk away happy knowing that you are going to a place where you will be happy.

A sample, very simple resignation letter to use is below. Stick with this and you’ll never go wrong!

Dear Mr. John Doe,

I want to take a moment to say thank you very much for the opportunity to work for <Company name>, I have enjoyed my time with the organization and appreciate the opportunities I had to learn and grow in my career during that time. I’ve recently accepted a position with another organization and as a result, I wanted to provide you with formal notice of my resignation.

My last day with <Company name> will be Friday, March 1, 2018.

As stated above, I appreciate the opportunity to have worked for <Company name>. If I can be of any assistance to you during the time of transition, please let me know.

Best Regards,

Jane Doe
